Cyprus in the Greek War of Independence - The Events of July 9th, 1821
A Concert commemorating the participation of Cyprus in the Greek War of Independence was held on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Marietta, GA.
Cyprus paid a high price in blood soon after the Greek War for Independence broke out against the Ottoman Turkish oppressors on March 25, 1821. As rumors of an uprising in Cyprus began to spread, the Turkish Pasha of Cyprus rounded up the Archbishop Kyprianos, the other three Metropolitans of Cyprus, along with 470 lay leaders from around the towns and villages of the island, and executed them, drowning in blood the spark of freedom that appeared in the hearts of the Cypriot Christians. That, of course, did not prevent many of them from leaving for the mainland to join the rebel forces that carried on the struggle. Today, the Church of Cyprus is seriously considering recognizing Archbishop Kyprianos as a Christian Martyr along with the other bishops and lay men who were unjustly slaughtered by the Turkish oppressors.
