New York (July. 6, 2016) — His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios gathered with the Holy Eparchial Synod to help elect the next Metropolitan of Chicago. Held at the Archdiocese in New York, hierarchs from all over the country gathered to determine the “Triprosopon” names from the previously released list of potential candidates.
Upon selecting the top three candidates, the names are sent to the Patriarchate for the Patriarchal Synod’s final decision. It is at that point that the next Metropolitan of Chicago will be officially selected. This point in the selection process comes just days before the Forty-day memorial service for Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago of blessed memory, taking place this Sunday in Chicago at the Annunciation Cathedral.
Earlier stages of the selection process included determining a list of potential candidates all fitting specific criteria including but not limited to: education, marital status, and time spent in the United States.
A list of 36 eligible candidates, including four auxiliary bishops, 22 archimandrites and ten presbyters was made public June 22, 2017. Since this list was announced, those who have interacted with the candidates were invited to submit reservations about individuals on the list to be reviewed by a committee and then taken into consideration during the Eparchial vote to determine the Triprosopon. Now, through prayer and thorough review of the candidates, the Eparchial Synod has made their selection and it is dependent on the Patriarchal Synod’s vote.
