Jacksonville, Fla. (Sept. 29, 2016) — During the weekend Sept. 23-26, St. John the Divine in Jacksonville celebrated its 100-year anniversary. Among those present in the celebrations were His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios, many parishioners, and the families of those who founded the church 100 years ago.
The weekend included a celebratory banquet and the groundbreaking for the future site of St. John the Divine, as the church expands into its new home and its second century. St. John the Divine also hosted a memorial service to commemorate all those who have contributed to the parish over the last 100 years. During the last three years the parishioners of St. John the Divine worked to make this weekend an extremely memorable one for their community and for visitors from all over the country.
In a letter to his parish recapping the celebration, Reverend Dr. Nicholas G. Louh wrote, “The weekend celebration of the Centennial of our parish was a series of exhilarating, historical events and services for St. John the Divine…Please accept our extreme gratitude for your support, attendance and enthusiasm during the weekend events. The Holy Spirit was truly in our presence as we celebrated our one hundred years of worship to God as well the new beginning of a second century of worship as we transition to our new home on Beach Blvd.”
His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios wrote in the weekly Bulletin, “I am thankful to almighty God that I serve a Metropolis which has strived to remember and honor its forefathers, but one which is also not simply content to maintain the things our fathers gave to us.”
